May 22, 2017 - Students are continuing "Iron Jawed Angels."
May 19, 2017 - Students began watching the movie "Iron Jawed Angels" today.
May 18, 2017 - Students discussed the poem, Barbie Doll and answered questions about the way that women are viewed through social media.
May 17, 2017 - Students are taking their vocabulary quiz on the Civil Rights Vocabulary. They are then reading an article for Housekeeping Monthly (1955) and writing a letter to the editor about the article. The article is entitled "How to be a Good Wife." It was also published in a high school textbook for Home Economics in the 1950s. Students were given a permission slip to have signed about watching the movie "Iron Jawed Angels" about the struggle by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns to help pass the 19th amendment.
May 16, 2017 - Students look at an article by Henry Finck about the impact of work on women in 1900. We are looking at the idea that women are frail both mentally and physically according to the article. We are also looking at the current situation and seeing if things have completely changed in the area of work.
May 15, 2017 - Students had the following for their start up today : Susan B. Anthony fought for women's rights all her life but did not live to legally exercise that right. What made Susan continue to believe "Failure is impossible"? Do you have that kind of determination? Why or why not?
May 12, 2017 - We are on our field trip to the Planetarium today.
May 11, 2017 - Students were given an opportunity to complete their web quest in Google Classroom. The web quest is due by midnight tonight.
May 10, 2017 - Student began working on a web quest on Women's Rights in Google Classroom. It will be due tomorrow.
May 9, 2017 - Students received new vocabulary on Women's Rights and took their immigration test today.
May 8, 2017 - Students finished their mission-us, City of Immigrants on Monday and review for their test.
May 5, 2017 - School was closed due to the storm.
May 4, 2017 - Today students read a primary document about immigration. Students explored some of the problems found during urbanization. It shows that there were many obstacles that were raised during urbanization.
May 3, 2017 - Students read about the anti-Italian sentiment toward Italian immigrants. We also looked at some of the different groups that were restricted and discriminated against.
May 2, 2017 - The students had their vocabulary quiz today on the immigrant vocabulary. If they finished before class was over they could continue their mission in A City of Immigrants.
May 1, 2017 - Today students were given the opportunity to play A City of Immigrants from mission-us.org. It allowed them to put their selves in the circumstances of a young Jewish immigrant arriving in New York City.
April 28, 2017 - Students today looked at the "Pet Door" era of immigration. We talked about the Chinese Exclusion Act and how some are comparing it to current restrictions on certain people from specific countries. In comparing the court rulings for both the current restrictions and the Chinese Exclusion Act, we found that the courts have reacted very differently.
April 27, 2017 - Today student read a worksheet about how Jews adjusted to life in America. We continued looking at the problems that immigrants faced as they settled in America. Vocabulary quiz is May 2, 2017.
April 26, 2017 - Students are working on a web quest about Ellis Island and the many immigrants that came through there. The web quest is located on Google Classroom.
April 25, 2017 - We looked at the conditions that immigrants encountered coming to America. We looked at how immigrants were changed by moving to America and how it often interrupted their heritage and traditions. In some cases, they even lost their names. Students completed a reading about Chinatown and answered questions about the reading.

April 24, 2017 - We are starting a unit on Discrimination and we are looking at immigrants first. Today students received new vocabulary on immigration. We also identified the five stages of immigration and what brought each one of them to a close.
April 13, 2017 - Students will have their vocabulary quiz on their Economics vocabulary today. Anything that is not finished on their month four budget, they will complete after the test and turn it in before leaving for the break.
April 12, 2017 - Students will begin their fourth month budget on their own using the income that they received for their chosen profession. They will also need to divide their assets and liabilities with their partners. They will make sure that they also have the information about car payments. They and their partner will determine what their best decisions are and why. What would they change about what they did, if anything.
April 11, 2017 - Students were completing their third month of budgets and the work that goes with them. They will also let me know what profession they want to pursue and how long it will take them in order to prepare for their chosen career. I will give them the monthly income for their profession and also their "student loan payments."
April 10, 2017 - Students played economic bingo today and reviewed for their vocabulary quiz which will be on Thursday. They also continued the work on their budget project.
April 7, 2017 - Students are completing their second budgets and all the work that goes with them. (Check register, checks, and saving register) Students are continuing to meet with Mrs. Forrest to address problems and concerns that they have. Most students have now drawn a fate card that has had a negative impact on their budget and have had to come up with a solution on how to solve the problem. (This has been an interesting time for students as they learn about the "real world".)
April 6, 2017 - Students began working on their second month's of budgets today. They have also drawn a fate card that will impact their budget. They also have the options of applying for a car loan.
April 5, 2017 - Students will have a one on one conference with Mrs. Forrest about their first month's budget. They were advised if there are any corrections or adjustments that they needed to make. They were then given the opportunity to correct those items before turning the first month's work in.
April 4, 2017 - Students will begin preparing their checks for their first month of bills today. They will also be keeping up with their check register and their saving account register. One of the goals is to stay within their "budgets".
April 3, 2017 - Today students began to make a monthly budget and figure how much they can do with their "paychecks". Students will start paying those monthly bills and learning to write checks and maintain a check register.
March 31, 2017 - Students are beginning to look at the fixed items for their budget such as housing, food, utilities, etc. They are figuring their income so that they know how much "money" they have to work with.
March 30, 2017 - Students will make corrections to their applications and essays if necessary. If not they will begin looking at how to prepare a budget.
March 29, 2017 - Today we are working on our application essays. Students will be submitting their applications and application essays. Tomorrow some will have make corrections and some will be ready to move to the next step in the project. They are being assessed on neatness , complete and accurate information and no errors on the application. The essay is being assessed on neatness, complete and accurate information that is not already found on the application, giving adequate (at least three) reasons why you are a good candidate for the job, and no errors on the essay in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

March 27, 2017 - Today we are beginning our Economics simulation. Students are getting their partners and are creating their profile identities. In the simulation, they will use these profiles to apply for a job, set up a bank account, apply for credit and figure a budget. Today we began with filling out the profiles which they will complete for homework. They will use those profiles tomorrow in order to apply for a job. They have received a classified ad sheet that they will choose an entry level job from. I used the above video to let them know what making a budget and living on your own really looks like.
I also showed this clip of 12 year old Madison Kimrey to make the point that even if you are not old enough to vote, you can still make a difference. She has been campaigning to restore pre-registration for voting for 16 and 17 year olds in North Carolina. This clip is from 2014.
March 24, 2017 - Today watched the video "State of Conflict:North Carolina" about the moral Monday movement and the influence of Art Pope on the state of North Carolina.
March 23, 2017 - Students will take their information about the Bill of Rights and apply it to solve the following problem. A dictator has taken over and has given them 48 hours to choose up to 5 amendments from the Bill of Rights and convince their classmates to agree with them. In their groups, they have to decide which 5 amendments to keep and why. They have to try to persuade their classmates to agree with them. They must present the best argument for their amendments that they can think of. Students will present their decision to their classmates and the class will vote on which amendments they would keep.
March 22, 2017 - Today we are discussing the Bill of Rights to make sure that students understand each of the first 10 amendments. After we discuss each amendment, students will then take the information and use it for a group project.

March 21, 2017 - Today students looked at the two political parties in our country and some of the major differences in their viewpoints. They also took a quiz to decide if they were Democrats or Republicans. They hopefully learned that we tend to not be all one or the other but that there is some common ground. Students were able to see that by finding common ground, we should be able to work together for the common good.
March 20, 2017 - The students will be taking their test on the articles of the constitution.
March 17, 2017 - Students will be taking their vocabulary quiz on the third week of government vocabulary words.
March 16, 2017 - We completed the articles and watched a little bit of the "West Wing." so that they could see an example of the many duties of the President.
March 15, 2017 - We are finishing up the Judicial Branch today. We began looking at Articles IV and V by reading some short articles and answering questions.
March 14, 2017 - We worked on high school registration today with Mrs. Jackson. Students will be having a vocabulary quiz on Friday, March 17. Students will also have a test about the Articles of the Constitution on March 20, 2017.
March 13, 2017 - We continued looking at the Executive Branch, the order of succession for the President and finished the graphic organizer that we were using. We also began looking at the Judicial Branch. Students read about the judicial branch and about their responsibilities.
March 10 - 2017 - We began working on the Executive Branch of government. Students received a graphic organizer that will help them to understand how the Executive Branch is organized and what the qualifications for the President and Vice President.
March 9, 2017 - We went over the privileges and rights given to members of Congress. We also talked about the notes that they took on Tuesday about things that Congress can not do. The students used the remainder of the class period to work on their web quest.
March 8, 2017 - In recognition of International Women's Day, students are doing a web quest and reading about Abigail Adams. She is one of the first women in the United States for standing up for the rights of women. She is well known for her "Remember the Ladies" letters to her husband John. Students will be looking at excerpts of those letters and answering questions about the different groups that were not remembered in the founding of our nation. Web quest and the other article about Abigail Adams (found on Google Classroom) are due by Friday.
March 7, 2017 - Students were tested today on the Constitution Convention. They were also given new notes concerning things that Congress can not do. They are :
Things that Congress Can Not Do:
1. grant titles of nobility
2. pass laws restricting religious pursuits
3, cannot suspend habeus corpus except in cases of rebellion or invasion
can not pass bill of attainder* or ex post facto law
5. Impose a tax or duty on articles exported from any state.
6. Give preference to ports of one state over another for import/export
7. Require any transport vessel bound from one state to another to enter, clear or pay duties
*Bill of attainder - act of legislature declaring a person or group of people guilty of some crime and punishing them, often without a trial.
March 6, 2017 - Students were given information about a new AP poll that said that most Americans think that we have lost our identity. However, most Americans can't agree on what that identity is. Students were asked to explain their view on what America's identity is? How does that identity impact their visions of the American dream? We talked about what they believed that identity was and was it different from generation to generation.
March 3, 2017 - Students worked on a worksheet about "What is an American?" They were to read a selection from St. Jean de Crevecoeur, a Frenchman and then answer questions about what he said about the topic of "What is an American?" Then they were to write a short speech about how they would define "what is an American today?"
March 2, 2017 - Students completed Lesson 14 in the We The People book today. We also reviewed what would be on the test on Tuesday. In most classes we started looking at a graphic organizer of the legislative branch.
March 1, 2017 - We went over a worksheet on the compromises made by Congress since there seemed to be some confusion about it. We also looked at the characteristics of the delegates of the Constitutional Convention. We then discussed some of the questions posed by a chart from We The People. Students then were to take the questions that were asked about the Constitution Convention in 1787 and they are to ask an adult about whether or not the time has come to have another constitutional convention. There has been a call by some in our country that it is time to revise or update the Constitution. After they have interviewed one adult they will then add their opinion to the chart. They must support all answers that they give.

February 28, 2017 - Students took their vocabulary quiz on the second week of constitution vocabulary. They also received the next set of vocabulary terms.
February 27, 2017 - Students did a worksheet on the compromises in the Constitutional Convention. They looked at the Great Compromise and how it impacted representation in the new Congress. We also talked about the compromises concerning slavery and protective tariffs. Students were given notes on main points that will be on their Constitution Convention test next Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
February 24, 2017 - Today students complete two more of the primary documents in the workbook. They then continued watching "A More Perfect Union". (I will try to add those documents to Google Classroom after school today. Check back later.) Today classes were shortened due to the assembly by NBHS at 1:00. Vocabulary quiz will be Tuesday, February 28.
February 23, 2017 - Students did two more documents in the primary document workbook. They then began watching the movie "A More Perfect Union" to see if their arguments agree with the actual arguments given at the Constitutional Convention. February 22, 2017 - Today students presented their arguments concerning the Articles of Confederation. They showed their understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the Articles. Students completed two documents in the primary document workbook today. (If you were absent go to Google Classroom and they are there.)
February 21, 2017 - Today we continued the discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the Articles of Confederation. Students were divided up into groups. One group was to come up with an argument on why the Articles of Confederation should be kept. The next group was to argue that the Articles of Confederation were good but did need some improvements and then they were to suggest the improvements. The last group was to argue that the Articles were so badly flawed that they needed to be discarded and a new government need to be established. Students also did a worksheet on the Northwest Ordinance. (If you were absent, go to Google classroom to access the worksheet on the Northwest Ordinance.)

February 15, 2017 - Today students took their vocabulary quiz on the first set of words for our study of government. They were given the next set of words to put in their notebooks.
February 14, 2017 - Students have their vocabulary quiz on the Part I Constitution vocabulary on Wednesday. We will be examining today where our system of law comes from.
February 13, 2017 - Students looked at how our government provides checks and balances and how we have separation of powers. The term "judicial review" was also introduced today. We watched the Crash Course video about checks and balances and the separation of powers.
February 10, 2017 - Students worked on what is constitutional government. We looked at the concepts of checks and balances and separation of powers.
February 9, 2017 - Students looked at the definition of civic virtue which is both citizens and their leaders live modest lives. They work hard and put the common welfare above their own selfish interests. We talked about why a republican form of government has to have public servants with civil virtue. Students were then asked to decide as a group on a person that had civic virtue and plea their case about why this person should be an example of civic virtue.
February 8, 2017 - Students are continuing their discussions of human rights as outlined by the United Nations.
February 7, 2017 - Students took their math benchmark today and therefore I only saw Mrs. Carlson's homeroom and my homeroom. I had them for about 20 minutes and we discussed human rights as outlined by the United Nations.
February 6, 2017 - Students took their vocabulary quiz on the Causes of the American Revolution (Part 2) and then we began our unit on Government. Today we talked about natural rights and living in a state of nature.
February 3, 2017 - Students will be given time during class to access computers in order to complete their take home test on the American Revolution.

January 27, 2017 - Students received new vocabulary definitions. They also looked at the significance of each event that lead to the American Revolution. If they did not finish the worksheet in class, they were to finish it for homework.
January 26, 2017 - Students examined the consequences of the Boston Tea Party. We determined the impact of the Intolerable Acts on Boston. We also determined what would lead other colonies into the problems with Great Britain in defense of Boston.
January 25,2017- Students continued looking at events that caused the Revolutionary War. Today we looked at the Boston Tea Party. Students also worked on their understanding of primary documents.
January 24, 2017 -Today students had their ELA benchmark so the classes were cut very short. We continued working on understanding primary documents.
January 23, 2017 - Students will have their vocabulary quiz today. They will also look at primary documents and work on their understanding of them. We will also talk about the difference in the viewpoints of the British and the Americans to the growing tensions of the 1770s.
January 20, 2017 - Students can continue working on their mission-us.org by taking the opposite position from what they did yesterday. They will do it once from both patriot and loyalist points of view. The vocabulary quiz was postponed until Monday.
January 19, 2017 - Students will be working on mission-us.org (Mission 1) today. It is an interactive game that makes them a witness to the Boston Massacre. They will have to make the decision if they are going to be a Patriot, a Loyalist or run for the whole situation.
January 18, 2017 - Students took their test on the French and Indian War up to the repeal of the Stamp Act today. They will have their vocabulary quiz on Friday. They will nee to bring headphones or earbuds with them tomorrow and Friday.

December 5, 2016 - Students were given a reading on the Navigation Acts and the Plantation Duty Act of 1673. Then there were different scenerios for them to determine how the Acts would have impacted them. We then talked about how the Acts impacted North Carolina and how it led to Culpeper's Rebellion.

December 1, 2016 - Today we are looking at early problems in the new colony of Carolina especially in the Albemarle area of the colony.
November 30, 2016 - Students were given the writing prompt: Why do you think that 3 weeks after the election, there is so much anger on both sides?" Students then had a discussion of the issues that have caused such anger and fear in our country after the elections. Students were told to be respectful of each other's opinions and I was very impressed with the maturity and insight that these students have. Many of them will be eligible to vote in the next election. I am very encouraged about our future.

November 28, 2016 - Students were giving an opportunity to complete their making a colony project. Then students received new vocabulary definitions about the settlement of North Carolina. We also went over a table about the settlement of the early colonies, when they were founded, who founded them and why they were founded.
November 24, 2016 - Happy Thanksgiving
November 23, 2016 - Today is a half day and students will be attending an assembly about AVID at New Bern High School. Any time in class will be used to finish projects and turn them in.
November 22, 2016 - We had a test on Pilgrims, Puritans and Quakers.
November 21, 2016 - We reviewed for the test that students have on Tuesday about Quakers, Pilgrims, and Puritans.
November 18, 2016 - Students will be working on their projects today of making their own colony.
November 17, 2016 - Students watched a short video on the Salem Witch Trials today. After the video we began to look at the Quakers and to compare and contrast this group with the Pilgrims and the Puritans. They also completed a worksheet about Quakerism entitled "Quakers' Fight for Religious Freedom."
November 16, 2016 - Students discussed the Puritans and the Salem Witch Trials. We discussed the accusations of witchcraft and how the rigid beliefs of the Puritans led to the witch hunt. We also discussed that there are still modern day witch hunts. Students mention some of the more modern witch hunts such as Hitler's extermination of the Jews, saying that all Muslims are terrorists, blaming certain groups for all crimes.
November 15, 2016 - Students took their test on Roanoke and Jamestown today. When the whole class was through, they worked on their "Making a Colony" project.
November 14, 2016 - Students will continue working on Pilgrims and Puritans. They will have a test on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 on Roanoke and Jamestown. (Don't forget to study) Students were given a "Making a Colony" today. Our target date for completion of the project will be November 22, 2016.

November 3, 2016 - We worked on the group assignment about the different theories on what happened to the Lost Colony. Students then saw a short video about the different theories.
November 2, 2016 - Students took their vocabulary quiz today and then we talked about the mistakes that occurred in the planning of the Roanoke Colony. Some of the mistakes were (1) they arrived too late to plant, (2) they made the Indians angry, (3)they did not bring enough supplies (4) they came during hurricane season, (5) they sent their leader back to England for help leaving them without a leader, and (6) the colony was planted in the wrong place. They are also looking at the theories about what happened to the colonists of the Lost Colony. We did the first theory in class together. One theory is that the colonists attempted to sail back to England. The evidence for that theory is (1) the houses were missing and the material could have been used to expand the boat that they had, (2)their supplies were missing (3)the boat they had was missing, (4)they left behind useless things, (5) and no bodies were found. The evidence against the theory is (1) No boat ever made it to England, (2)the boat was too small for all the colonists, (3)the colonists carved "Croatoan" not England on the fort, and (5) the colonists at Jamestown found evidence that suggested that the colonists had not left from the "New World."
November 1, 2016 - Mrs. Jackson, our counselor came to help the students do a practice registration form for the high school. This practice will give the option to talk over their choices with their parents.
October 31, 2016 - In the spirit of Halloween, we read ghost stories set in North Carolina today.
October 28, 2016 - We continued to look at the Lost Colony and try to understand what happened to make the colony unsuccessful.
October 27, 2016 - Students continue to work on their tombstones.

October 26, 2016 - Students began working on a tombstone for someone that we have talked about during class. They are practicing research skills. We will be working on these tomorrow also.
October 25, 2016 - Students had the Language Arts benchmark assessment today and after that they watched a short video on the Lost Colony and then we began to talk about the different theories of what happened to the colony.
October 24, 2016 - Students looked at the writings and drawings of John White. They also answered questions about the initial visit between the English and the Natives.
October 21, 2016 - Students continued to work on information about the Lost Colony of Roanoke. They completed several worksheets on the Lost Colony as well as a primary source article on Newsela.
October 20, 2016 - We completed the story of Henry VIII of England and students also did a worksheet entitled Protestant England and Catholic Spain. Students were also introduced to the Lost Colony at Roanoke.
October 19, 2016 - Students received new vocabulary words for English settlement. Students also were told the story of Henry VIII and how his reign created tension between England and Spain. That tension would ultimately lead to war between the two countries under the reign of Henry VIII's daughter Elizabeth I. That war prevented John White from being able to return to the colony with supplies in a timely manner.
October 18, 2016 - Test on Native Americans.
October 17, 2016 - Today's start up was : Explain how North Carolina's geography contributed to the flooding from Hurricane Matthew. Today we compared Hurricane Matthew with Hurricane Floyd (1999) and look at video footage from both storms. We also did a quick review for the test tomorrow.
October 11, 2016 - Students were supposed to have a test on Native Americans today. However due to Hurricane Matthew we are out of school for the entire week. The test on Native Americans will be on Tuesday, October 18. I will push it back to Tuesday to give students a chance to return to a sense of normalcy before taking the test. Hope everyone is safe and hope to see everyone back in school on Monday, October 17, 2016.

October 7, 2016-Students will finish up the Native American unit today. We will end with a video on the Trail of Tears.
October 6, 2016 - Students will recap the Tuscarora Indian War and the Indian Removal Act and the impact that they had on the Native Americans. They also had a reading about the legal issues in the Indian Removal Act.
October 5, 2016 - Students are doing two articles today on Newsela. One article was about the Vice Presidential debate and one was about a letter written to the Cherokee by President Andrew Jackson about Indian removal. They also had a worksheet about the Trail of Tears giving an account of the removal. (See Google Classroom) We are also finishing up the notes on Native Americans in preparation for our test on Tuesday.
October 4, 2016 - Today students signed up for Newsela and read an article about the Presidential Debate and completed a quiz on the article. They also completed an article on the Tuscarora War and did a map on the Indian Languages in North Carolina.
October 3, 2016 - Students completed a worksheet on the Iroquois League and we discussed the form of government that was developed by the Iroquois League.
September 30, 2016 - Students finished watching the video "How the States Got their Shape" and also finished the video quiz that went with it.
September 29, 2016 - The students completed a sheet on the Iroquois League which is the first democracy in America. We also looked at the sixth nation of the Iroquois League which was the Tuscarora and that they were added to the Iroquois League after the Tuscarora War in North Carolina in 1711-1712. They watch a short clip about the Tuscarora.

September 28, 2016 - Students are reading a Cherokee legend and then they are writing their own story explaining something in nature. Students received progress reports today.
September 27, 2016 - Students read and answered questions on an Aztec song. We then talked about the civilization of the Aztecs and then we talked about early American society.
September 26, 2016 - The students did a worksheet about the mystery of the Mayas for their start up. This was about how the Mayas vanished and trying to figure out why. We then began looking at early Indian groups in America. We talked about the different ages of Indian culture and then we began to look at specific groups such as the Olmecs.
September 23, 2016 - The start up today is in a paragraph (5-7 sentences) answer the following question: Is it ever okay for the government to take someone's property? Explain. We are going to watch a video about eminent domain cases. The students will then discuss if it is every okay for the government to take someone's property? Is it every okay for the government to take one person's property and give it to someone else? This will hopefully make the taking of one's property more realistic to them so that they then can understand how the Native Americans felt when settlers came and took their land.
September 22,2016 - Students are taking their geography test today. Tomorrow we will begin our new unit on Native Americans.
September 21, 2016 - Students watched "How the States Got Their Shapes" as the conclusion to the geography unit. They will taking their geography test tomorrow.

September 20, 2016 - We did a review for the test on Thursday. Students were giving a worksheet to complete that was an example of the types of questions that they could expect on their test on Thursday. We also finished up the last of the information about the impact of geography had on the settlement of North Carolina.
September 19, 2016 - Students took their vocabulary quiz on the geography vocabulary definitions today. They received new vocabulary for Native Americans. We will be finishing up geography and moving to Native Americans this week. Geography test is on Thursday September 22, 2016
September 16, 2016 - Mrs. Jackson (our counselor) will be in class today to talk to students about what they need to do this year in order to prepare for the high school. This is the first of several sessions that Mrs. Jackson will have with the students in order to prepare them for the transition to high school next year.

September 6, 2016 - Family trees and family stories were due today. For our start up this morning, we looked at a US map and identified the first 13 colonies that we will be discussing in the first part of the course. We are beginning to look at North Carolina's geography. We are starting with the coastal plain today. Tomorrow the students will have a vocabulary quiz on the first set of vocabulary words. (Ten disciples of Social Studies) Students were also assigned a geography project today. See the instructions above.

September 1, 2016 - Students received their first set of vocabulary words and we talked about how these words related to Social Studies. Social Studies = all of the following : 1. Geography 2. History 3. Government, 4 Economics, 5.Political Science, 6. Archaeology, 7. Anthropology, 8. Philosophy/Religion, 9. Sociology, 10. Psychology, and 11. Law.
